Actor and producer Dakota Johnson is all set to make her directorial debut with a feature film titled A Tree Is Blue. The upcoming project, which goes on floors next month in Los Angeles, will feature a screenplay by Vanessa Burghardt, who previously co-starred with Johnson in Cha Cha Real Smooth.
Best known for her roles in Fifty Shades, Persuasion, and the recent The Materialists, Johnson will take the director’s chair for the first time in a full-length film. She earlier directed a short film, Loser Baby, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, marking her initial foray into filmmaking.
A Tree Is Blue is being financed by Rivulet Entertainment and produced by Johnson along with Ro Donnelly and Sam Racanelli under their banner TeaTime Pictures. The project also has Rob Paris and Mike Witherill serving as producers for Rivulet, while Hyunji Ward of TeaTime and Rick Steele are attached as executive producers.

The film reportedly explores an intimate narrative brought to life through Johnson’s personal creative vision, reflecting her growing interest in storytelling beyond acting. With production set to begin in Los Angeles, the project marks a major milestone in Johnson’s expanding career as both an artist and filmmaker.
Industry insiders are already anticipating A Tree Is Blue to be one of the most promising independent directorial debuts of 2026, given Johnson’s strong artistic collaborations and her established presence in both acting and producing circles.
