Popular comic book characters Archie, Betty, and Veronica are learning about Holi in the latest edition of ‘The World of Betty & Veronica Digest’ #38, released Thursday, just in time for the festival of colours in India.
Co-CEO of Archie Comic Publications, Nancy Silberkleit, shared that the 10-page story, titled ‘Celebration Surprise’, was inspired by her experiences in India. "The thought behind this is the beauty of India that I have experienced in India," she told PTI.
In the story, Archie and his friends discover the traditions, fun, and food associated with Holi. Silberkleit also dedicated the project to Om Arora, owner of Delhi-based Variety Book Depot, who helped introduce Archie Comics to Indian readers. "After so many decades of Om's business being the distributor of Archie throughout India, Om and I unite, we are family," she said.
Silberkleit fondly recalled celebrating Holi during her visits to India and the lasting connections she formed. "My travels mainly to New Delhi, Pune, and Jaipur have always been business. I know there is so much more for me to learn about India—its people, vibrancy, and culture. My heart has two homes: the US and India!"
She emphasised how her experiences shaped ‘Celebration Surprise’, saying, "Friendships, cooking, the beautiful colours of India, streets always celebrating life—these are the ingredients that sparked this story. I have learned to make roti! From their kitchen now to mine."
The comic’s artwork was carefully designed to capture the essence of India. "I told my team that it had to feel like India. I wanted the shapes, lines, and patterns of India to find their way into the pencilling of the story," she said.
