Bollywood superstar Sunny Deol has hinted at a possible shift to South Indian cinema, praising the industry's passion for filmmaking. His comments come amid reports that filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has moved out of Mumbai, citing disillusionment with Bollywood.
At the trailer launch of his upcoming film Jaat on Monday, Deol lauded the approach of South Indian producers, particularly Mythri Movie Makers, the Hyderabad-based production house behind ‘Jaat’ and the blockbuster ‘Pushpa’ franchise.
"My producers are so good. I want producers of Bombay to learn (from them). You all call it Bollywood, but first refer to it as Hindi cinema, and learn how to make cinema with love (from South filmmakers),” the 67-year-old actor told reporters.
He emphasized the South Indian industry's commitment to storytelling, saying, "They focus and enjoy the subject, rope in the director, show trust in his vision, and leave no stone unturned in achieving that. The story is the hero (for them). I thoroughly enjoyed working with all of them."
Deol, who made a grand comeback with Gadar 2 in 2023, even quipped about relocating, saying, "I told them (makers), ‘Let's do another film.’ Maybe I shall go and settle there (in the South). Kya pata wahin jake bas jau main (Who knows, I just might go settle down there).”
