The Delhi High Court on Thursday made sharp observations against actor Rajpal Yadav while hearing his bail plea in a long-running ₹9 crore cheque bounce and loan default case. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma remarked that Yadav was sent to jail because he “didn’t honour his own commitment,” noting that the actor had repeatedly failed to fulfil assurances made before the court to clear outstanding dues.
During the hearing, the court pointed out that Yadav’s counsel had given conflicting submissions on different occasions. Earlier, the actor had affirmed that the pending amount would be paid directly to the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. However, during the latest proceedings, his counsel stated that the money would instead be deposited before the court, prompting the Bench to ask the defence to clarify its position before taking up the matter again.
Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5 after the High Court rejected his plea for additional time to settle the dues. The court ordered him to serve a six-month sentence, observing that he had failed to comply with its directions on more than two dozen occasions. The case stems from financial liabilities arising after the failure of his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, which led to multiple cheque bounce complaints.

As per the court’s earlier order dated February 2, Yadav was required to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him. While two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh each were deposited with the Registrar General in October 2025, the court noted that approximately ₹9 crore remained unpaid. The amount already deposited was directed to be released to the complainant.
Meanwhile, Yadav’s wife, Radha Yadav, stated that several members of the film industry have extended financial support to the actor following his incarceration. Prominent actors including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Sonu Sood, and singer Mika Singh are reportedly among those who have come forward to assist. The court is expected to resume hearing the bail application later, as the actor seeks temporary relief to attend a family wedding.
