In a serendipitous twist worthy of a Bollywood script, Vidya Balan received her breakthrough role in Parineeta during Enrique Iglesias’s concert in Mumbai in 2004. Speaking ahead of the singer’s upcoming performances on October 29 and 30, 2025, the actress shared the unforgettable moment with Bombay Times, calling it one of the most defining experiences of her life.
Vidya was at the concert with her friend Pavitra, eagerly trying to edge closer to the stage in hopes of being pulled up by Enrique. With her phone switched off, she missed a call from director Pradeep Sarkar. He reached Pavitra instead and asked, “Vidya kahan hai?” When the phone was passed to her, Vidya stepped outside to a quieter spot. That’s when producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra came on the line and declared, “You are my Parineeta.”
As she stood trembling with tears streaming down her face, Enrique returned to the stage and began singing Hero. “While the song was always special to me, this moment sealed the deal,” Vidya recalled. “I couldn’t stop crying. My hands and legs were trembling. It is undoubtedly one of the most special moments of my life.”

Now, two decades into her illustrious career, Vidya jokingly credits Enrique for her cinematic journey. “I completed 20 years in the movies. No wonder he’s coming back to celebrate that!” she laughed. She plans to attend his upcoming show to relive the magic, and if given the chance to dedicate a song to him, she’d choose Piyu Bole from Parineeta — “That would be poetic justice.”
From a concert crowd to the silver screen, Vidya Balan’s rise as one of India’s most versatile actresses began with a phone call, a song, and a dream come true — proving sometimes, life truly does imitate art.
