Veteran Bollywood actor Deb Mukherjee, father of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, passed away on March 14 at the age of 83. A member of the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth film dynasty, he left behind a cinematic legacy spanning several decades. His final rites will be held today at 4 PM at Pawan Hans, Mumbai.
Deb Mukherjee had been unwell for some time and was under medical care before he breathed his last at 9:30 AM. Known for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, he starred in films like ‘Abhinetri’, ‘Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool’, ‘Tu Hi Meri Zindagi’, ‘Bandhu’, and ‘Do Aankhen’. Though often working behind the scenes in later years, he remained a respected figure in the film industry.
Deb Mukherjee also shared a special bond with Bollywood actress Kajol. As her paternal uncle, he was a significant part of the Mukherjee family’s film legacy. Over the years, he played both lead and character roles, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His last notable appearances included modern films like ‘Kaminey’ and ‘King Uncle’.
Meanwhile, Deb Mukherjee’s son, filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, is currently engaged in some of the biggest Bollywood projects. Actor Ranbir Kapoor recently confirmed that Brahmastra 2 is officially in the works. "Brahmastra is something Ayan has nurtured for years. While we haven't made any official announcements yet, the sequel is definitely happening, and you’ll hear about it soon," Ranbir said during Alia Bhatt’s birthday celebrations.
Ayan Mukerji is presently focused on directing ‘War 2’, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. Once the film wraps up, he is expected to shift gears toward the Brahmastra sequel.
Deb Mukherjee’s passing marks the end of an era, but his cinematic contributions and family’s legacy will continue to shape Bollywood for years to come.
