The timeless Bollywood masterpiece Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, is set to mark its 50th anniversary with a grand showcase at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, 2025. The restored 4K version, complete with six minutes of additional footage, including the original ending where Thakur kills the infamous Gabbar Singh, will be presented at a gala event at the 1800-seater Roy Thomson Hall, honoring the film’s legendary status.
Released on August 15, 1975, Sholay initially struggled at the box office but gradually captivated audiences, cementing its place as a cultural phenomenon. With its unforgettable dialogues, the iconic friendship between Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), Sanjeev Kumar’s vengeful Thakur, and Amjad Khan’s chilling portrayal of Gabbar Singh, the film redefined Hindi cinema’s storytelling and villainy. The ensemble cast, including Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini, delivered performances that continue to resonate across generations.
The restoration, a collaborative effort by the Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films Pvt Ltd, brings Sholay to life in stunning 4K clarity. The Film Heritage Foundation announced the screening on Instagram, sharing the film’s iconic poster and details of the North American premiere at TIFF’s 50th edition. This follows a successful screening of the restored version at Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in June 2025.
