Actor Priyanka Chopra recently reflected on her early journey in beauty pageants and recalled how she was not particularly interested in fashion while growing up. Speaking about her teenage years and her entry into pageantry, Priyanka described herself as a “quintessential 90s girl” who never expected to step into the world of modelling and international recognition. Her life changed dramatically when she first participated in the Femina Miss India competition and later went on to win the Miss World 2000 title at the age of 18.
In a recent conversation on the Going Rogue Podcast, Priyanka shared memories from that phase of her life, describing how overwhelming the transition was for a teenager who had never modelled before. She explained that stepping into beauty pageants meant quickly adapting to a completely new world of fashion, grooming, and public appearances. According to her, the experience forced her to mature faster and learn skills she had never previously imagined needing.
Priyanka also revealed that she was not particularly fashion-conscious during her younger years. While many contestants in pageants came with modelling experience or fashion exposure, she entered the competition without any professional background in the field. She described herself as someone who simply enjoyed typical teenage trends of the 1990s rather than actively following the fashion industry.

Recalling a particularly unusual incident, Priyanka shared that she once pierced her own belly button in the back of a taxicab. She said she enjoyed the piercing so much that when it closed up, she decided to redo it herself during a cab ride. The actor narrated the story humourously, saying the decision reflected the carefree and adventurous attitude she had as a young teenager during that time.
Priyanka’s participation in the Miss India competition eventually opened the door to international recognition. Her victory at the Miss World pageant in 2000 brought her into the global spotlight and laid the foundation for a career that would later span Bollywood and Hollywood. The title not only established her as a prominent public figure in India but also introduced her to audiences around the world.
Over the years, Priyanka Chopra has built a successful career in film, television, and global entertainment. Looking back at her early days, she often credits the pageant experience for shaping her confidence and resilience. What began as an unexpected opportunity for a small-town teenager eventually became the starting point of an international career that transformed her into one of India’s most recognised global stars.
