Actor Manoj Bajpayee has spoken publicly about the controversy surrounding his upcoming Netflix film "Ghooskhor Pandat," revealing that he received threats and that members of his family were subjected to online abuse after objections were raised over the film's title. The actor addressed the issue during a recent interaction with PTI, reflecting on the backlash that followed the announcement of the project as part of Netflix's 2026 content slate.
The controversy erupted shortly after the streaming platform unveiled the film, which stars Manoj Bajpayee alongside Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, and Divya Dutta. An FIR was reportedly filed against the makers, alleging that the title and certain aspects of the project hurt religious sentiments. The issue quickly gained traction on social media, leading to criticism and demands for changes to the film before its release.
Responding to the objections, the filmmakers issued a public apology and later informed the Delhi High Court that the movie would be released under a different title. Bajpayee said the team had not anticipated such a strong reaction but chose to respond promptly once concerns were raised. According to the actor, creative professionals must be willing to make corrections if their work unintentionally causes offense, adding that changing a title is not a major challenge for filmmakers.

The actor also recalled the personal impact of the controversy, stating that he continued traveling and working despite receiving threats. Bajpayee said he was particularly disturbed by the way online criticism extended beyond him to involve his family members. However, he stressed that he chose not to engage in arguments on social media, preferring instead to focus on his work rather than respond to what he described as uninformed or impatient reactions.
Bajpayee expressed concern about the growing tendency of people to form strong opinions without fully understanding a subject. He suggested that many critics reacted to the film without knowing its actual storyline or intent. The actor maintained that the project addresses issues unrelated to the assumptions being made online and said he believes meaningful discussions require knowledge and understanding rather than immediate judgment.
The first-look teaser of the film, unveiled during Netflix's "Next on Netflix 2026" event, was subsequently removed following the controversy. The project has been written by Neeraj Pandey and Ritesh Shah and marks Shah's directorial debut. Despite the setback, the makers are moving forward with plans to release the film under a revised title, while Bajpayee remains focused on the work itself rather than the controversy that surrounded its announcement.
