The upcoming romantic drama ‘Abir Gulaal’, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor, has landed in controversy just weeks before its scheduled release on May 9. The backlash follows a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives and left many injured. In the wake of the incident, social media has erupted with calls to boycott the film, reigniting debates around the participation of Pakistani artists in Indian cinema.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, ‘Abir Gulaal’ explores a cross-border love story—a genre that has often stirred public and political sensitivities. Critics argue that releasing a film featuring a Pakistani actor so soon after a terror attack is inappropriate and insensitive. Some netizens have gone as far as threatening to block its release in Indian theatres, citing national security concerns and questioning the film industry’s choices.
This is not the first time Fawad Khan has found himself at the centre of such a controversy. In 2016, his appearance in ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ faced similar backlash following the Uri attack. The incident ultimately led to an unofficial ban on Pakistani artists in Indian films.

When the film’s trailer had launched, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had renewed its opposition to Pakistani actors, urging distributors and theatre owners to steer clear of screening ‘Abir Gulaal’. The party emphasized its long-standing stance on prioritizing national sentiment over cross-border collaborations.
As the situation unfolds, the film's release remains uncertain. The controversy once again underscores the volatile intersection of art and politics in South Asia.
