Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital to discuss a range of administrative and governance-related issues, with a key focus on the long-pending demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting comes amid continuing political debate over the region’s constitutional and administrative structure.
According to official sources and posts shared from the Home Minister’s office on social media platform X, the discussion covered several governance matters including the rules of business for the Union Territory administration, reservation policies, and the appointment of the Advocate General. The meeting is part of ongoing consultations between the Centre and the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir following recent political developments in the region.
Ahead of the meeting, Omar Abdullah had indicated that he would continue to raise the issue of statehood restoration with central leadership whenever opportunities arise. He noted that the process is not expected to be resolved in a single meeting and requires sustained engagement. His comments reflect the ongoing political expectations within the Union Territory regarding a return to full statehood status.

On Sunday, Abdullah had also strongly commented on the current administrative structure in Jammu and Kashmir, describing a Union Territory system with dual authority as an inefficient model of governance. He reiterated that the restoration of statehood remains one of the most important political and administrative demands for the region and should be prioritised.
During his recent remarks, Abdullah also clarified the division of administrative powers between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor’s office. He explained that critical security-related decisions such as internet shutdowns, mobile service suspensions, and surveillance measures fall under the jurisdiction of the Home Department and the Lieutenant Governor, who is responsible for law and order and security matters in the Union Territory.
The meeting between the Chief Minister and the Union Home Minister is being seen as part of ongoing dialogue on governance arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir. While no immediate announcement was made regarding statehood restoration, both sides are expected to continue discussions on administrative coordination and policy issues affecting the region.
