The "Mirzapur" juggernaut has officially arrived on the big screen. The experiment was new, and hence the trade remained tentative in the lead-up to release: could a web series, no matter how popular, successfully translate into a theatrical film that audiences would pay to watch in cinemas? "Mirzapur: The Movie" appears to have answered that question decisively, delivering what is being described as one of Bollywood's biggest-ever non-star-led opening days.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and produced by Excel Entertainment in association with Amazon MGM Studios, the film released theatrically on Friday, September 4, marking the crime franchise's transition from streaming screens to the silver screen. The ensemble cast includes Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, alongside Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan, and Rajesh Tailang, bringing back the core characters that have anchored the show's massive fan following since its debut in 2018.
The film's opening day collections are still being finalized, with live tracking figures varying across box office monitoring platforms as reports continue to come in throughout the day. Early estimates from various trade trackers place Day 1 collections in the range of approximately ₹10 to ₹12 crore net in India, with some platforms projecting the figure could climb toward ₹20-25 crore gross across all languages once final numbers are tallied later in the evening. The film opened across more than 6,700 shows in over 750 cities nationwide, reflecting a wide theatrical release designed to capitalize on the franchise's established fan base.

Momentum for the film had been building well ahead of its release, driven by strong advance bookings in the 24 hours preceding the opening. According to trade reports, the film had already sold over 172,000 tickets through advance sales as of the afternoon before release, figures that significantly outpaced Tripathi's previous theatrical outing. Morning show occupancy on release day was also notably strong, reportedly surpassing that of nearly every other major Bollywood release in 2026 with the exception of "Dhurandhar 2," a testament to the pent-up demand generated by the show's devoted fanbase.
Industry observers have noted that the film's opening day performance is set to rival, and potentially exceed, the opening collections of other major 2026 releases such as "Saiyaara" and "Awarapan 2," underscoring the strength of the "Mirzapur" brand as it makes its theatrical debut. The film's success is also being aided by favorable release timing, with the partial holiday surrounding Janmashtami contributing to higher theater footfall, while limited direct competition in the Hindi market, aside from the currently running "Hanuman Ansh," has allowed "Mirzapur: The Movie" to capture a larger share of available audiences without significant division of moviegoers across competing titles.
