Bollywood star John Abraham's latest thriller ‘The Diplomat’ garnered a respectable ₹4 crore on its opening day on Friday, with experts attributing its initial success to a compelling narrative, strong performances, and release coinciding with Holi festival.
‘The Diplomat’, which debuted on March 14, 2025, has made a promising start at the box office, earning ₹4 crore on its first day, as per film trade website Sacnilk.
Occupancy rates for ‘The Diplomat’ on its opening day averaged 20.45%, with morning shows at 7.31%, afternoon at 19.42%, evening at 28.50%, and night shows at 26.56%. Chennai led with a remarkable 75.33% occupancy, followed by Bhopal at 29.50% and Kolkata at 29%.
Experts say the film's release during the Holi festival likely contributed to its initial success, as festive periods often boost theatre attendance. With positive word-of-mouth and the weekend ahead, ‘The Diplomat’ is expected to see continued growth in the coming days. Despite facing competition from Vicky Kaushal's ‘Chhaava’, which earned ₹7.25 crore on its fifth Friday, ‘The Diplomat’ emerged as a solid choice for moviegoers.
Directed by Shivam Nair, ‘The Diplomat’ is based on the true story of Uzma Ahmed, portrayed by Sadia Khateeb, an Indian woman who was deceived into marriage in Pakistan and subsequently rescued. John Abraham plays J.P. Singh, the Indian diplomat pivotal in her return.
Critical reception has been positive, with particular praise for John Abraham's nuanced portrayal of the empathetic and resolute diplomat. Sadia Khateeb's depiction of Uzma's vulnerability and resilience has also been lauded.
