Vijay's farewell film Jana Nayagan witnessed a sharp decline in box office collections on its second day after a strong opening, although it continued to post impressive overall numbers globally. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the H. Vinoth directorial earned ₹21.15 crore net in India on Friday, taking its two-day domestic total to ₹63.85 crore. The film's India gross collection has reached ₹75 crore, while its worldwide earnings have climbed to ₹112.50 crore.
The film had opened with ₹42.70 crore net in India on Thursday, making Friday's collection a drop of nearly 50.5% from its opening-day earnings. Despite the decline, the film maintained a steady audience presence throughout the day. The Tamil version remained the primary contributor, collecting ₹17.95 crore on the second day, while the Hindi version added ₹1.85 crore and the Telugu version contributed ₹1.35 crore to the overall domestic collection.
Occupancy figures reflected improving audience turnout as the day progressed. The film recorded an overall occupancy of 44.33% on Friday, beginning with 32.77% during the morning shows and increasing to 37.23% in the afternoon. Evening shows registered 47% occupancy, while the highest attendance was recorded during the night shows at 60.31%, indicating stronger footfall later in the day despite the overall drop in collections.

Reacting to the film's reception, director H. Vinoth said Vijay's films often experience mixed reactions immediately after release before gaining wider appreciation over time. He noted that discussions surrounding the strengths and weaknesses of Vijay's films typically dominate the first week, but public opinion often changes in the months that follow. Vinoth described Jana Nayagan as an important film for Tamil cinema and called directing Vijay's final film a dream opportunity.
The release was accompanied by large-scale celebrations across Tamil Nadu, with fans gathering outside theatres for special events, cultural performances and laser shows. Cinema halls, including Chennai's Woodlands and Casino theatres, witnessed enthusiastic crowds, while actor Ravi Mohan also joined fans in celebrating the release. The film has been widely promoted as Vijay's final acting project before his full-time transition into politics, making it one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of the year.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan follows the story of Vetri, played by Vijay, a prisoner serving a sentence for an undisclosed crime who develops a close bond with prison warden Srikanth and takes responsibility for his daughter, Viji. As he helps her pursue her dream of joining the Indian Army, his past resurfaces through the arrival of the antagonist John Himmler, portrayed by Bobby Deol. The film also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Prakash Raj in key roles, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Released in theatres on July 23, the film marks the conclusion of Vijay's acting career spanning more than three decades and over 60 films.
