Emraan Hashmi’s latest release ‘Ground Zero’ had a modest start at the Indian box office, earning Rs 1 crore on its opening day, according to estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. While the day-one numbers were in line with expectations, the film’s future hinges on strong word-of-mouth rather than box office fireworks.
Directed by Tejas Deoskar and produced by Excel Entertainment, ‘Ground Zero’ is a gritty patriotic drama based on the real-life story of BSF officer Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey. The officer led a covert mission to eliminate Ghazi Baba, the mastermind behind the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2002 Akshardham temple strike.
Despite facing stiff competition from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kesari 2’ and Sunny Deol’s ‘Jaat’, reports suggest ‘Ground Zero’ has a fair chance to perform over the weekend due to its broader emotional appeal and relevance. Trade analysts point out that while its rivals cater to niche audiences, ‘Ground Zero’ holds a more universal appeal with its grounded storytelling.

Early social media reactions have been encouraging. Viewers have called it “an impactful film about the war against terrorism” and praised its realistic treatment, strong performances, and powerful screenplay. Emraan Hashmi has been singled out for his “outstanding” portrayal, with Sai Tamhankar and Zoya Hussain earning plaudits for their supporting roles.
Speaking at the film’s screening, Hashmi said the film sheds light on a critical operation aimed at dismantling the Jaish-e-Mohammad network. “The mission started in 2001 and culminated in 2003. It’s a story that needed to be told,” he said.
While the film’s commercial trajectory remains uncertain, ‘Ground Zero’ is being lauded for its earnest storytelling and patriotic message—qualities that could turn it into a sleeper hit.
