The Indian entertainment industry mourns the loss of Dheeraj Kumar, the beloved actor-producer who left an indelible mark on cinema and television. Kumar, aged 79, succumbed to acute pneumonia at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Tuesday at 11:00 AM, according to close associate Ajay Shukla. Admitted to the ICU on Saturday due to fever, cold, and cough, his condition worsened, leading to his untimely demise.
Kumar’s family shared their grief in a heartfelt statement: “With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dheeraj Kumar on July 15, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. A true gentleman, he was a mentor, friend, and father figure to many, always full of laughter and generosity. We are grateful for the prayers and support during this difficult time.” His last rites are scheduled for Wednesday at Pawan Hans Crematorium.
With a career spanning over five decades, Kumar’s journey began as a finalist in a 1965 talent contest alongside icons like Rajesh Khanna and Subhash Ghai. He debuted in the 1970 film Raaton Ka Raja and gained prominence with roles in classics like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Sargam (1979), and Kranti (1981). A stalwart in Punjabi cinema, he starred in over 20 films between 1970 and 1984.

In 1986, Kumar founded Creative Eye Limited, revolutionizing Indian television. His production house delivered iconic shows like Om Namah Shivay (1997–2001) on Doordarshan, along with Shree Ganesh, Adalat, Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati, and Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, cementing his legacy as a visionary producer.
Kumar’s warmth, mentorship, and contributions to the industry will be cherished forever. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of fans and colleagues alike.
