In a recent interview marking the 25th anniversary of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, actor Ameesha Patel reflected on the film’s legacy, its massive success, and the discussions it continues to generate. She revisited both the overwhelming audience response and the criticism that surrounded the film at the time of its release. The 2001 partition-era romance, directed by Anil Sharma and starring Sunny Deol alongside Ameesha , went on to become one of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters.
Ameesha recalled that the film’s success unfolded rapidly, leaving little time to process its scale during release. She said the movie opened strongly across India and became a cultural phenomenon almost immediately. According to her, she was juggling multiple projects at the time and only later fully grasped the magnitude of its impact on audiences and her own career.
She also shared that she watched Gadar on the big screen for the first time only during its 2023 re-release, ahead of Gadar 2. Revisiting her role as Sakeena after many years, she described the experience as surreal and emotional, noting how differently she now views the character compared to when she first played it as a young actor early in her career.

A key point she addressed was the widely discussed 18-year age gap between her and Sunny Deol. Ameesha said she had questioned the casting at the time, asking why she was paired with a much older co-star. She recalled being told that the script demanded the dynamic, with Sunny Deol’s character portrayed as a father-figure-like presence in Sakeena’s life, making the pairing essential to the narrative rather than conventional casting logic.
Ameesha also reflected on early warnings she received before signing the film, including concerns that it could negatively impact her career following her success in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. Critics had advised her against taking on a non-glamorous, emotionally intense role, but she ultimately proceeded, saying the storytelling and character arc justified the decision despite industry skepticism.
Looking back at the film’s enduring popularity and the success of Gadar 2, Ameesha said both she and Sunny Deol were overwhelmed by audience reactions. She noted that the franchise’s continued resonance across generations proved the emotional strength of the story, with viewers still deeply connected to the characters of Tara Singh and Sakeena decades later.
