The Hyundai Ioniq5 the first high performance electric car from the South Korean automaker's stable has sold 1,800 units till March 2025 since its launch in January 2023. This February its sales were pegged at 16 units compared to 65 units sold in February 2024. In March this year, the number was down to 13 units.
Sister concern Kia’s EV6 SUV that shares the Ioniq5 platform (Electric Global Modular Platform) just saw a facelifted EV6 trim launched end March priced at Rs 65 lakh. In January and February, the EV6 recorded zero sales with December 2024 sales pegged at 61 units.
The new EV6 comes to India as a completely built unit. The Ioniq 5 comes as a completely knocked down kit and getting locally assembled. This saves on import tariffs so the price of the Ioniq5 starts at Rs 46 lakh.
It is clear that these high-performance cars sell in niche double-digit volumes monthly. The popular electric cars in India, that are cheaper, have better volumes to flaunt.
Hyundai Motor Company yesterday unveiled its newly designed Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 6 N Line at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025 in Korea, hinting at the arrival of a true high-performance electrified streamliner in the future. The Ioniq6 launched globally in 2022 has now come with facelifted features and enhanced properties.
The specifications of the Ioniq N Line are based on the Korean-market model. Features, technology and claimed figures may differ depending on the market.
The Ioniq 6 may come to India in coming months though Hyundai has not announced its decision on that yet. Hyundai has adopted a top down approach in India in terms of its EV strategy. And Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first of the six battery electric vehicles to be rolled out in India by 2028.
The Kona and Ioniq 5 will help the carmaker understand the Indian market better and position itself in the customer’s mind as a technologically advanced EV brand. Hyundai has followed it up with the rollout of its first mass market EV this January with the Creta electric that has seen a strong consumer response.
