Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made headlines on Wednesday as he took a sleek white Tesla for a spin just a day after the EV giant opened its first-ever showroom in India at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Cameras rolled and the crowd gathered as Shinde, flanked by heavy security and reporters, slowly eased the futuristic vehicle out for a test drive outside the Mumbai Assembly. The moment quickly went viral, with many noting the symbolism of a top Indian leader behind the wheel of Elon Musk’s world-famous electric car.

Shinde, who also attended the grand launch event at BKC, praised Tesla’s decision to enter the Indian market and said the brand picked the “right city and state” to make its debut.
