India Yamaha Motor has launched the all-new YZF-R2 sportbike, marking the model’s global debut and the company’s entry into the competitive 200cc segment. Priced between ₹2,30,500 and ₹2,53,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the motorcycle sits above the popular YZF-R15 in Yamaha’s lineup and is available in three variants with five colour options. Manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility, the YZF-R2 is designed for both the domestic market and export to developed regions, with deliveries scheduled to begin through Blue Square dealerships from mid-September 2026. Pre-bookings opened earlier in August for a token amount of ₹10,000.

At the heart of the YZF-R2 is a newly developed 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, DOHC, four-valve engine that delivers 26.5 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of peak torque at 8,000 rpm. The powerplant features finger-follower rocker arms with diamond-like carbon coating technology derived from the flagship R1, prioritising reduced friction and responsive high-rev performance. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox and an assist-and-slipper clutch as standard. The mid and top variants additionally receive a bi-directional quickshifter, described as a segment-first feature.

Prospective buyers considering financing options will find monthly EMIs varying according to loan amount, interest rate, down payment and tenure. Illustrative calculations based on a 100 per cent loan of the ex-showroom price at 9.5 per cent interest over 24 months place the monthly instalment at approximately ₹10,583 for the standard variant, ₹10,997 for the quickshifter model and ₹11,616 for the range-topping R2 M. Actual figures will differ once on-road costs, a realistic down payment of 10–20 per cent, longer tenures of 36 or 48 months, and prevailing bank or dealer rates are factored in; typical EMIs on popular platforms often settle in the ₹6,000–₹7,500 range under more conventional terms.

Beyond the powertrain, the YZF-R2 incorporates a lightweight high-tensile steel diamond frame, 37 mm upside-down front forks, dual-channel ABS, traction control and Yamaha Ride Control with Street, Sport and Rain modes. A 5-inch colour TFT display with smartphone connectivity, LED lighting and a claimed kerb weight of 149 kg further enhance its appeal as a refined yet accessible supersport machine. The top-spec R2 M adds adjustable suspension, adjustable levers, a faux-suede seat and keyless operation.

Positioned against rivals such as the KTM RC 200, the YZF-R2 strengthens Yamaha’s R-series portfolio while offering Indian customers a locally engineered product with global aspirations. Prospective owners are advised to compare current finance schemes, insurance packages and any festive-season offers at authorised dealerships to determine the most suitable monthly outlay before placing an order.
