Iran has delivered a stark diplomatic message to the United Nations, warning it will respond “decisively” to any military aggression against it, according to a letter sent to U.N. Secretary‑General António Guterres. Tehran conveyed the message through its permanent mission to the UN in New York, amid sharply escalating tensions with the United States and concerns about possible military confrontation in the Middle East.
In the correspondence sent Thursday, Iran’s mission said it does not seek war but interpreted recent public comments by U.S. President Donald Trump as signaling a “real risk of military aggression.” The Iranian letter specifically warned that bases, facilities, and assets of what it described as a “hostile force” in the region would be considered legitimate targets if Tehran were subjected to armed attack.
The warning comes amid heightened diplomatic and military posturing as negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme continue alongside increasing deployments of U.S. military assets to the Middle East. According to Iranian officials, Trump’s rhetoric — including references to potential use of foreign military bases such as Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford — constitutes an explicit threat that could destabilise the region if not addressed.

Iran’s mission to the UN also urged the Security Council to take urgent action to prevent escalation, highlighting what it called a “persistent build‑up of military equipment and assets” by the United States. Tehran framed its statement within international law, asserting its inherent right to self‑defence under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, but reiterated that it did not want to initiate conflict.
Analysts say the letter reflects deepening mistrust between Tehran and Washington, complicating an already fraught diplomatic landscape. While Iran insists on diplomatic solutions and compliance with international norms, its emphasis on a decisive response underscores how quickly tensions could escalate into broader confrontation if misunderstandings or clashes occur.
The situation continues to draw global attention, with regional players and international organisations urging restraint. Observers note that any military conflict in the Gulf would have far‑reaching implications for global security, energy markets, and diplomatic relations among major powers.
