One of the most talked-about moves ahead of the IPL 2026 season was the high-profile trade that saw Sanju Samson shift from Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings. The transfer, completed even before the IPL auction, also involved Ravindra Jadeja moving in the opposite direction. While the trade generated massive buzz among fans, former India batter Hanuma Vihari believes the decision was influenced by factors beyond pure cricketing needs.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Vihari stated that CSK did not require an opening batter for the upcoming season, suggesting that Samson’s acquisition was not a tactical necessity. Instead, he argued that Samson’s immense popularity, particularly in southern India, played a crucial role in Chennai’s decision. According to Vihari, the IPL is as much a commercial enterprise as it is a cricketing competition.
Vihari highlighted that Samson commands a massive fan following, especially among supporters from Kerala, who consistently turn up in large numbers to watch him play. This loyal fanbase, he said, significantly boosts a franchise’s brand value, ticket sales, and overall marketability. For franchises like CSK, such commercial considerations often weigh heavily in major transfer decisions.

From a cricketing perspective, CSK were already well-stocked at the top of the order even before Samson’s arrival. Players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Aayush Mhatre, and Urvil Patel provide strong opening options, making it clear that the team did not have a pressing need for another specialist opener. Samson’s inclusion has instead intensified competition within the squad.
Vihari also suggested that Samson may not necessarily open the innings for CSK and could instead bat at number three. He pointed out that Samson had previously played in that position for Rajasthan Royals after returning from injury. The move, therefore, appears to be a blend of commercial foresight and tactical flexibility rather than a direct response to a batting void.
