India all-rounder Washington Sundar expressed satisfaction with his return to red-ball cricket after playing a decisive role in India’s dominant 300-run victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test, which concluded on the third day at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Monday. Sundar’s all-round performance, featuring both a crucial half-century and a four-wicket haul, proved instrumental in India’s comprehensive win.
Sundar, who had recently been engaged in continuous T20 cricket, said rediscovering his rhythm in the longest format was one of the most satisfying aspects of his performance. He noted that he felt comfortable from the very first ball, highlighting how important it was for him to build volume and consistency early in the match to adapt to Test conditions.
The off-spinner played a key role with the ball in Afghanistan’s second innings, where his disciplined spell helped break the resistance of the opposition batters. He emphasized that he did not focus on variations in pace but instead concentrated on maintaining rhythm and accuracy, which he felt was crucial on a slowing pitch that offered assistance to spinners.

Sundar explained that the surface required precise execution, particularly in terms of length. He noted that even slightly short deliveries allowed batters time to adjust on the back foot, making consistency around the stumps the most effective strategy. His ability to maintain control and adjust to conditions contributed significantly to India’s bowling dominance.
The Indian bowling unit also had a few unsuccessful review calls during the match, but Sundar described such moments as part of the natural flow of modern cricket. He said the team relies on experience, instinct, and technology in equal measure, acknowledging that not every decision will succeed but each provides valuable learning.
Reflecting on his overall contribution, Sundar said he was pleased with both his batting and bowling performances. Coming in during India’s commanding first innings total of 564 for 8 declared, he remained unbeaten on 52, showing composure and discipline to help extend India’s lead beyond Afghanistan’s reach and seal a dominant victory.
