India’s star para-athlete Sumit Antil created history once again after breaking his own world record in the men’s javelin F64 category at the 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships 2026 on Wednesday. The two-time Paralympic gold medalist registered a massive throw of 74.82 meters, surpassing his previous world-record mark of 73.29 meters set during the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. The remarkable effort further cemented Antil’s status as one of the world’s finest para-athletes.
Competing in Bengaluru, Antil dominated the field with a commanding performance and comfortably secured the gold medal for Haryana. His latest achievement added another milestone to an already decorated career that includes gold medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The athlete’s consistency and ability to improve on his own records have made him one of the most celebrated figures in Indian para sports.
Maharashtra’s Sandip Sargar finished second in the event with a best throw of 62.88 meters, while Rajasthan’s Sandeep claimed the bronze medal with an effort of 61.83 meters. Antil’s performance, however, remained the biggest highlight of the championship as spectators witnessed yet another world-class display from the Indian para-javelin champion. His record-breaking throw also underlined India’s growing dominance in para-athletics on the global stage.

The championship also featured several notable performances across track and field events. Praveen Kumar won gold in the men’s high jump T64 event after clearing 2.00 meters, while Varun Singh Bhati secured silver with a jump of 1.84 meters. In the women’s 400m T20 category, Deepthi Jeevanji claimed first place with a timing of 57.84 seconds, continuing her impressive run in international and domestic competitions.
In the men’s 400m T47 race, Maharashtra’s Dilip Gavit sprinted to gold with a timing of 47.64 seconds. Haryana’s Rinku emerged victorious in the men’s javelin throw F46 event with a throw of 61.70 meters, narrowly ahead of Uttar Pradesh athletes Ajeet Singh and Ravi Kumar. The competition also witnessed participation from renowned para-athletes, including Mariyappan Thangavelu and Shailesh Kumar, alongside international competitors from Thailand and the Philippines.
The three-day championship, being held from May 26 to 28 in Bengaluru, has brought together leading para-athletes from across India and abroad ahead of upcoming international events. Officials and coaches viewed the competition as a crucial platform for athletes preparing for future global tournaments. Antil’s world-record effort has once again placed the spotlight on India’s rapidly rising standards in para sports and reinforced the country’s growing reputation in international athletics.
