Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison has suggested that remarks made by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir about individual milestones after the country’s victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 were likely directed at senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Harmison said Gambhir’s comments during the post-match press conference appeared to be a subtle dig at the two veterans while emphasising the importance of team success over personal achievements.
Speaking on the talkSPORT YouTube channel, Harmison said he appreciated Gambhir’s candid approach even though he had previously found the former Indian opener difficult to relate to as both a player and a coach. According to Harmison, Gambhir’s statement about not caring for personal milestones suggested a shift in focus toward team-oriented goals. He added that the coach’s comments appeared to indirectly reference Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have been associated with numerous individual batting records during their careers.
Harmison noted that Gambhir’s remarks highlighted the importance of collective performance in cricket, particularly in high-pressure tournaments. He said the statement reinforced the idea that the dressing room environment should prioritise winning matches and trophies rather than celebrating individual statistical achievements. Harmison added that Gambhir’s authority within the team had likely increased after guiding India to a major global title.

During the press conference, Gambhir said that discussions around milestones had dominated Indian cricket for too long and urged the media and fans to focus instead on team trophies. He pointed to recent performances by players such as Sanju Samson, who delivered strong innings in the final stages of the tournament. Gambhir argued that chasing personal milestones could sometimes come at the expense of the team’s overall scoring momentum.
The coach emphasised that cricket, as a team sport, should ultimately be measured by championships rather than individual records. He said players should focus on contributing to match-winning performances rather than chasing personal numbers. According to Gambhir, such an approach helps teams maintain aggressive intent and ensures that collective goals remain the priority in major tournaments.
Despite India’s triumph in the tournament, Harmison also downplayed the team’s overall dominance during the competition. He argued that India were not necessarily the strongest side throughout the event but managed crucial moments better than their opponents. Harmison said the team’s victory was heavily influenced by an explosive start from openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in the final after New Zealand opted to field first, which ultimately helped India secure the championship.
