Sunrisers Hyderabad made a blazing start against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their crucial IPL 2026 league clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, even though opener Travis Head departed early. After six overs, SRH raced to 63/1 with Abhishek Sharma leading the charge through an aggressive 26 off just 14 balls, while Ishan Kishan settled in at the crease.
SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first in what is Hyderabad’s final league-stage match of the season. Despite the mathematical possibility of securing a top-two finish, Cummins admitted before the match that the scenario would require a massive win and said the team had been instructed to play fearless cricket without overthinking qualification calculations.
The Hyderabad batting unit once again showed intent from the very beginning on a batting-friendly surface expected to favor stroke-makers. However, the early dismissal of Head prevented SRH from getting the ideal opening partnership they would have wanted. The Australian left-hander, known for his explosive starts, failed to convert his early momentum into a big score, giving RCB a much-needed breakthrough.

Even after losing Head, Abhishek Sharma continued attacking the bowlers with confidence, maintaining SRH’s aggressive approach in the powerplay. His quick-fire boundaries ensured that the run rate stayed above ten per over, putting immediate pressure on the RCB bowling attack. Kishan also looked comfortable rotating strike and finding occasional boundaries as Hyderabad targeted a massive first-innings total.
For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the return of skipper Virat Kohli after recovering from a concussion concern was a major boost ahead of the playoffs. RCB entered the match aiming to maintain momentum from a strong campaign and avoid a heavy defeat that could affect their chances of finishing strongly in the points table.
The match carried significant playoff implications, with SRH hoping for an extraordinary victory margin to challenge for a top-two spot alongside Gujarat Titans. Hyderabad’s powerful pace attack featuring Cummins, Sakib Hassan, Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge, and Nitish Kumar Reddy has been one of the team’s strengths this season, but their immediate focus remained on posting a daunting total against a confident Bengaluru side.
