Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has returned to the Indian Premier League in a new role, taking charge as the head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The appointment marks Ganguly’s first stint as the head coach of an IPL franchise after previously working with Delhi Capitals in senior leadership and mentoring roles. He will take over the coaching responsibilities following the departure of the setup led by Hemang Badani, bringing one of Indian cricket’s most prominent former captains into a new phase of his IPL career. Ganguly has already been closely associated with Delhi Capitals, having served as the franchise’s Director of Cricket and later worked with the team as a mentor. His familiarity with the organisation and its players gives him previous experience of the franchise’s cricketing structure. Before moving into senior leadership roles, Ganguly was also part of the Delhi Capitals coaching setup during the period when former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was the head coach.
His return therefore represents a continuation of an association that has extended across different roles within the franchise. The move also gives Ganguly his first opportunity to occupy the top coaching position in the IPL. During his playing career, Ganguly established himself as one of India’s most influential captains and played a significant role in shaping the team during the early 2000s. After retiring from international cricket, he moved into cricket administration and other leadership positions, eventually becoming president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. His experience across playing, administrative and franchise cricket environments will now be brought into the day-to-day running of Delhi Capitals. Ganguly’s appointment comes after changes to the Delhi Capitals coaching structure. The franchise had been coached by Hemang Badani, who took charge of the side after the conclusion of Ponting’s long association with the team.
Ganguly’s elevation to head coach represents another significant change as Delhi Capitals prepare for the 2027 season. The franchise will now look to combine his leadership experience with the rest of its support staff as it begins preparations for another IPL campaign. For Ganguly, the role will require a shift from the strategic and administrative responsibilities he previously handled to the more direct demands of coaching an IPL team. As head coach, he will be involved in planning, player preparation, tactical decisions and managing the squad through the demands of a long T20 season. His previous experience with Delhi Capitals means he is already familiar with the franchise environment, although the head coach position will give him greater responsibility for the team’s on-field performance.

Ganguly’s appointment also adds considerable leadership experience to a franchise that has continued to search for its first IPL title. Delhi Capitals have reached the IPL final once, in 2020, when they finished runners-up to Mumbai Indians. The franchise has also undergone several changes in its leadership and coaching combinations over the years. Ganguly’s arrival provides continuity in one respect because of his previous involvement with the organisation, while simultaneously marking a fresh beginning in the coaching department. His previous association with Ponting is another notable aspect of the appointment. Ganguly worked with the Delhi Capitals setup when the Australian great was in charge, giving him experience of the franchise’s coaching environment from a different perspective. Ponting’s tenure was followed by further changes to the coaching structure, and Ganguly now moves into the position that Ponting and Badani previously occupied. The transition places a former India captain at the centre of the franchise’s cricketing plans for the upcoming season.
The IPL 2027 season will therefore mark a new professional chapter for Ganguly. While he has previously influenced teams through administration, mentoring and senior cricketing roles, becoming a head coach gives him a direct opportunity to shape an IPL side from the dugout. His appointment is also significant for Delhi Capitals, who will enter the new season under a coach with extensive experience of international cricket, leadership and the franchise's own internal setup. Ganguly’s return to an active IPL coaching role is expected to attract considerable attention ahead of the 2027 campaign. The former India captain now faces the task of translating his leadership experience into coaching methods suited to the fast-changing demands of T20 cricket. With his previous association with Delhi Capitals and his experience across different areas of the game, his appointment gives the franchise a familiar but significantly expanded role for one of the most recognisable figures in Indian cricket.
