The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a formidable 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the side, with Test skipper Shubman Gill appointed as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel.
Gill, who last played a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2024, earned his spot following a stellar performance in the recent Test series against England, where he scored 754 runs, including four centuries. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar praised Gill, stating, “His form in England exceeded all expectations.”
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, whose participation was uncertain due to a packed Test schedule against the West Indies in October, marks his T20 return since the 2024 World Cup.
The squad also sees the inclusion of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Jitesh Sharma as the backup wicketkeeper-batter. Despite a strong case, Yashasvi Jaiswal was named among the five standby players, with Agarkar noting, “It’s unfortunate Jaiswal has had to miss out, but he will have to wait.”
India, placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 in Dubai, followed by a high-stakes clash with Pakistan on September 14.
