India's campaign at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in England and Wales has suffered a significant setback after all-rounder Shreyanka Patil was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with an ankle ligament injury. The 23-year-old sustained the injury during India's match against the Netherlands in Leeds on Wednesday, forcing the team management to make a replacement ahead of the crucial stages of the competition.
Shreyanka twisted her ankle while fielding and was seen lying on the ground in visible pain before receiving immediate medical attention from the support staff. After on-field treatment, she was stretchered off the field and later diagnosed with an ankle ligament injury. The injury has brought an early end to her World Cup campaign, depriving India of one of its promising spin-bowling all-rounders.
The latest setback adds to a series of injury concerns that have troubled Shreyanka in recent years. She previously missed the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup after suffering a fractured finger and was later sidelined for an extended period due to shin splints in both legs and a stress reaction in her wrist. Those injuries kept her away from competitive cricket for nearly a year before her return to the international stage.

To fill the vacancy, the Indian team has named leg-spinner Prema Rawat as Shreyanka's replacement. The 24-year-old, who represents Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League, has featured in six matches across the last two seasons and claimed three wickets. Despite her domestic experience, Prema is yet to make her international debut and now has an opportunity to earn her first India cap on the world stage.
India have started their Women's T20 World Cup campaign on a positive note, registering victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands in their opening two fixtures. The team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, has displayed a balanced performance with both bat and ball and remains among the early contenders in the tournament despite the loss of an important squad member.
The focus now shifts to India's upcoming clash against South Africa on Sunday, where the team will aim to continue its unbeaten run. While Shreyanka's absence will be a challenge for the bowling unit, the management will hope that Prema Rawat can seize the opportunity and strengthen the squad as India pushes for a deep run in the Women's T20 World Cup.
