Rain delayed the start of the crucial IPL 2026 clash between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday evening. The toss was postponed due to a wet outfield after showers arrived shortly before the scheduled start of play. Ground staff quickly covered sections of the field while fans inside the stadium waited for weather conditions to improve.
Match officials later confirmed that the first pitch inspection would take place at 8:15 PM IST to determine whether the game could begin safely. Although the rain had stopped, moisture on the outfield remained a concern for officials. The delay could have major implications for KKR, who are fighting to stay alive in the playoff race and can ill afford to lose points at this stage of the tournament.
RCB entered the contest with strong momentum after their thrilling two-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians earlier this week at the same venue. Led by Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru currently sit in a strong position on the points table with 14 points from 11 matches. Another win would move them significantly closer to sealing a playoff berth in IPL 2026.

KKR, meanwhile, have revived their campaign after a difficult run in the middle of the season. The Kolkata-based franchise bounced back from five consecutive defeats to register four straight victories, bringing themselves back into contention for the top four. However, with the play-off race becoming increasingly competitive, even a rain-affected result could hurt their qualification hopes badly.
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan had earlier predicted that the Raipur surface could assist fast bowlers because of uneven bounce and seam movement. He suggested that RCB consider strengthening their pace attack by including another seamer in the lineup, potentially replacing either an overseas batter or spinner. Zaheer also questioned the recent form of spinner Suyash Sharma, who has struggled for consistency this season.
RCB’s confidence has been boosted by recent strong performances from key players. All-rounder Krunal Pandya played a match-winning innings against Mumbai Indians, while veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar impressed with a four-wicket haul. With both teams chasing crucial points and the playoff battle intensifying, all attention now remains on the weather and the outcome of the pitch inspection in Raipur.
