Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed a rare behind-the-scenes moment from the 2014 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, recalling how he once had to physically intervene to prevent then-India captain Virat Kohli from getting into a heated confrontation during a tense on-field exchange with the Australian team. The incident, according to Shastri, took place during a period marked by intense competitiveness and frequent verbal exchanges between players on both sides.
The 2014–15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is widely remembered as a defining series in modern India–Australia cricket relations. It also marked Virat Kohli’s first assignment as India’s Test captain, following MS Dhoni’s brief absence from the format. The series was played in a charged atmosphere, with aggressive fast bowling, sharp sledging, and high emotional intensity shaping much of the contest. Kohli’s battles with Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson became one of the most discussed aspects of the tour, setting the tone for a rivalry that carried forward in later years.
Shastri recounted the incident while speaking on a podcast associated with Kohli’s lifestyle brand One8, where he was asked whether he had ever needed to stop the former India captain from engaging in a physical altercation. The former coach initially downplayed the idea before confirming that there was one such instance during the Melbourne Test. Kohli, who was present during the discussion, was seen reacting with laughter as Shastri revisited the memory, indicating the passage of time had softened the intensity of the moment.

Describing the situation in detail, Shastri said tensions had already been building between Kohli and Mitchell Johnson throughout the match. He recalled that Kohli was struck early in his innings, which further heightened emotions on the field. According to Shastri, both players continued exchanging words during the session, with the atmosphere remaining highly charged as Australia’s bowling attack maintained constant verbal pressure. He said that as Kohli walked back toward the dressing room around the lunch break, the competitive energy was still running high, prompting him to step in and pull the batter aside, urging him to focus solely on his batting rather than the ongoing verbal exchanges.
Shastri added that moments like these were not uncommon in that era of Test cricket, where intensity and aggression often spilled over into personal exchanges between players. However, he emphasized that such incidents also reflected the competitive mindset that Kohli brought into leadership, which often translated into strong performances and an uncompromising attitude on the field. Despite the heated exchanges, Shastri noted that the communication between him and Kohli remained focused on performance and strategy, ensuring the team stayed aligned even in high-pressure environments.
The Shastri-Kohli partnership would go on to define one of the most successful periods in Indian Test cricket history. Under their leadership combination, India achieved consistent dominance at home and significant breakthroughs overseas, including consecutive Test series wins in Australia. Their tenure also saw India reach the pinnacle of the ICC Test rankings and maintain that position for an extended period, marking a transformative phase in the team’s approach to red-ball cricket.
