The iconic Wankhede Stadium is set to honour several cricketing greats after the Mumbai Cricket Association announced plans to name a stand after former India captain Ravi Shastri. The decision was taken during an Apex Council meeting held on Friday, marking another step by the association to commemorate figures who have significantly contributed to Mumbai and Indian cricket. Alongside the stand naming, three stadium gates will also be dedicated to prominent players from the city.
According to the MCA, the Level 1 stand located below the press box will bear Ravi Shastri’s name in recognition of his distinguished service as a player, captain, coach, and commentator. Shastri, a former Mumbai captain, has been closely associated with the city’s cricketing ecosystem for decades and remains one of India’s most recognisable cricket personalities. The move is intended to acknowledge his long-standing impact on the sport at both domestic and international levels.
In addition to the stand dedication, Gate No. 3 at the stadium will be named after former India batter Dilip Sardesai. Sardesai represented India in 30 Test matches and played 179 first-class games between the 1960-61 and 1972-73 seasons. Widely respected for his contributions during India’s early overseas successes, Sardesai remains a significant figure in Mumbai’s cricket history.

Gate No. 5 will honour former India women’s team stalwart Diana Edulji, who featured in 20 Tests and 34 One-Day Internationals between 1976 and 1993. Meanwhile, Gate No. 6 will be named after Eknath Solkar, the renowned all-rounder celebrated for his exceptional close-in fielding. Solkar represented India in 27 Tests and seven ODIs and was considered one of the finest fielders of his era.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik said Mumbai cricket stands on the strong foundation laid by its stalwarts and emphasised the association’s responsibility to honour those who brought pride to the city and the nation. He noted that naming the stand after Ravi Shastri is a tribute to the former captain’s immense contribution as a player, leader, and coach.
Naik added that dedicating stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji will ensure that every fan entering the venue is reminded of the legends who shaped Mumbai’s rich cricketing heritage. The MCA said the initiative reflects its commitment to celebrating the past while continuing to inspire future generations of cricketers.
