Former Mohun Bagan Athletic Club President and ex-Rajya Sabha member Swapan Sadhan Bose, popularly known as “Tutu” Bose, passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday at the age of 78. Bose had reportedly suffered a massive heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital in the city late Monday night, where he died the following day. His death has prompted condolences from the sporting and political communities, particularly among supporters of Mohun Bagan, one of India’s oldest and most celebrated football clubs.
Born on January 23, 1948, in Howrah, West Bengal, Bose became associated with Mohun Bagan during the 1989-90 season and went on to serve the club in several key administrative positions over more than three decades. He remained deeply involved with the club’s functioning until April 2025, when he formally announced his retirement from all official responsibilities. During his long tenure, Bose played an influential role in shaping the club’s administration and was regarded as one of the most recognisable figures in Indian football management.
In a statement shared on social media, Mohun Bagan Athletic Club described Bose as a devoted administrator whose contribution and lifelong service would remain permanently remembered by the institution and its supporters. The club referred to him as “Mohun Bagan Ratna” and praised his unwavering dedication to the organisation over the years. Bose was widely respected not only for his administrative work in football but also for his influence in Kolkata’s sporting culture and public life.

Apart from his association with football, Bose also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha between 2005 and 2011. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Mohun Bagan and Indian football administration. Tributes continued to pour in from former players, club officials, political leaders, and fans, many of whom remembered him as a passionate sports administrator who devoted much of his life to strengthening one of the country’s most historic sporting institutions.
