Indian cricket team batting coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed the controversial decision to exclude fast bowler Arshdeep Singh from the playing XI in the Asia Cup 2025 opener against UAE, a move that surprised fans and experts alike. India opted for Jasprit Bumrah as the sole specialist pacer, supplemented by part-time bowlers Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya, while fielding three spinners. Kotak emphasized that team selections are made without bias, prioritizing the side’s best interests.
Responding to queries about Arshdeep’s omission, Kotak told reporters, “There is no agenda, no personal liking or disliking. The captain and head coach decide what’s best for the team.” He acknowledged the disappointment of sidelined players but stressed the collaborative spirit within the squad, noting that all 15 members are deserving of a spot, and those not playing actively support their teammates. The decision sparked debate among experts, who expected Arshdeep’s inclusion given his recent form.
Kotak also addressed questions about Sanju Samson’s batting position, clarifying that while Samson has limited experience at No. 5 or 6, his versatility allows him to adapt to any role. “Sanju is a good enough player to bat at any number,” Kotak said, affirming the team management’s confidence in the wicketkeeper-batter’s ability to meet situational demands.
