South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has scripted a remarkable turnaround over the past 12 months, recovering from a drug ban in early 2025 to emerge as one of the standout performers of IPL 2026 for Gujarat Titans. The pacer, who currently features among the leading wicket-takers in the tournament and is in contention for the Purple Cap, described the period as one of the most challenging yet transformative phases of his career. Rabada’s resurgence has also coincided with South Africa’s historic triumph in the World Test Championship, adding another significant milestone to his comeback story.

Rabada had missed a major portion of the 2025 Indian Premier League season after serving a one-month suspension linked to cocaine abuse. The episode triggered widespread criticism and intense public scrutiny, placing one of world cricket’s premier fast bowlers under pressure both professionally and personally. However, only weeks after completing the suspension, Rabada returned to international cricket and played a crucial role in South Africa’s successful World Test Championship campaign, helping the team secure a long-awaited ICC title and restoring confidence in his cricketing future.

Reflecting on the turbulent year in an interview with PTI, Rabada said the experience taught him not to become consumed by outside criticism or public opinion. The 30-year-old stated that he had learned to focus on the views of people closest to him rather than attempting to satisfy everyone. According to Rabada, the difficult phase strengthened his understanding of personal resilience and self-belief, while also helping him become mentally stronger amid the pressures associated with modern international cricket and professional sport.

Rabada has continued that momentum into IPL 2026, where he has consistently delivered high-speed spells for Gujarat Titans while regularly clocking speeds close to 150 kmph. With 21 wickets already this season, he remains one of the most effective fast bowlers in the tournament and a leading contender in the race for the Purple Cap. His performances have played an important role in Gujarat Titans’ campaign and reinforced his reputation as one of the premier pace bowlers across all formats of the game.

The South African pacer also spoke about the physical demands of modern cricket and the importance of managing workload carefully to remain fit across formats. Rabada, who missed the away Test series against India last year because of a rib injury, acknowledged that maintaining fitness becomes increasingly challenging with age and the crowded international calendar. He stressed the importance of paying attention to smaller aspects of conditioning and recovery to avoid long-term injuries while continuing to compete at the highest level.

Looking ahead, Rabada said he intends to prioritise international cricket over franchise leagues such as Major League Cricket and The Hundred in order to manage his schedule more effectively. With South Africa preparing for a busy home Test season against Australia and England, along with the ODI World Cup in 2027, the fast bowler said he had consciously decided to sacrifice participation in certain leagues to preserve his fitness and focus on national commitments. His comments reflect the growing challenge faced by modern cricketers in balancing international responsibilities with the expanding global franchise cricket calendar.
