India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is likely to feature in the upcoming one-off Test against the Afghanistan national cricket team, subject to clearance from the medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, according to reports. However, the fast bowler is expected to be rested for the subsequent ODI series as part of workload management plans ahead of a packed international calendar.
India is scheduled to host Afghanistan in a short bilateral series beginning less than a week after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The tour will open with a one-off Test match starting on June 6 in Mullanpur, followed by three One-Day Internationals to be played in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai on June 14, 17, and 20, respectively. The series is expected to provide India an opportunity to assess player fitness and squad depth following the IPL campaign.
According to a PTI report, Bumrah’s participation in the five-day match depends on the final assessment by the BCCI’s medical and fitness staff. The pacer has been carefully managed in recent seasons due to recurring workload concerns and injury-related setbacks. Team management is reportedly keen to avoid overburdening him, especially with several important international assignments scheduled later in the year.

The report added that even if Bumrah is declared fit for the Test match, he will not be considered for the ODI leg of the series. The decision is believed to be part of a broader strategy to preserve the 32-year-old fast bowler for major tournaments and longer-format cricket. Bumrah remains one of India’s most important players across formats, with selectors and support staff continuing to prioritize his long-term fitness.
India’s coaching and medical staff have increasingly adopted a cautious approach with senior fast bowlers, particularly after multiple injury concerns in recent years. Managing recovery periods between tournaments has become a central part of team planning, especially in seasons featuring back-to-back domestic and international commitments. Bumrah’s availability is therefore being treated as a matter requiring close monitoring rather than immediate confirmation.
The Afghanistan series will also mark another important assignment for the visiting side as it continues to expand its presence in international cricket across formats. Matches in Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai are expected to attract significant attention from fans, especially with India likely to test combinations following the IPL season. An official announcement regarding Bumrah’s inclusion is expected once the BCCI medical team completes its evaluation.
