Rishabh Pant has been fined INR 12 lakh after Lucknow Super Giants maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday. The penalty was confirmed by the Indian Premier League through an official media advisory shortly after the conclusion of Match 59, despite Lucknow Super Giants securing an important victory over Chennai Super Kings in the contest.
According to the IPL statement, the action was taken under Article 2.22 of the tournament’s Code of Conduct, which deals specifically with minimum over-rate offenses. Since this was Lucknow Super Giants’ first over-rate violation of the season, the punishment remained limited to a monetary fine imposed on captain Rishabh Pant. Under IPL regulations, captains are held directly responsible when teams fail to complete their overs within the prescribed time limit during matches.
The development added a mixed ending to what had otherwise been a successful evening for Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise collected crucial points with the victory against Chennai Super Kings, but the slow over-rate offense ensured official disciplinary action followed the match. The sanction also reinforced the IPL’s continued emphasis on maintaining match pace and adhering strictly to tournament timing regulations during the ongoing season.

After the game, Rishabh Pant also addressed questions regarding tactical decisions made during the match, particularly concerning the batting order. Pant said he had been prepared to bat earlier but explained that the team management wanted to provide opportunities to players who had not received sufficient chances during the tournament. He added that although he personally considered different options repeatedly during the match, a captain must ultimately respect the collective decisions taken within the team environment and support the group’s strategy.
The IPL’s Code of Conduct outlines progressively stricter punishments for repeated slow over-rate offenses. While a first violation generally results in a fine for the captain, repeated breaches during the season can attract heavier financial penalties and even suspension-related sanctions. In Pant’s case, the advisory clarified that no additional punishment had been imposed because it was the franchise’s first offense under the rule this season.
The incident has once again highlighted the pressure captains face in balancing tactical decisions, bowling changes, and match tempo during high-intensity IPL contests. For Rishabh Pant, the evening ultimately produced both relief and responsibility—relief from securing a vital win for the Lucknow Super Giants and responsibility in the form of an official fine tied to the team’s inability to maintain the required over-rate. As the IPL 2026 season enters a crucial stage, franchises are expected to remain especially cautious about avoiding further disciplinary breaches.
