India began their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a commanding seven-wicket victory in Delhi, but the result also raised fresh questions over Sanju Samson’s place in the playing XI. Samson was preferred over young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the opening match, yet his latest opportunity ended with another disappointing performance, increasing the pressure on the experienced batter to deliver in the upcoming games.

India opted to bowl first and restricted Afghanistan to 156/8, with left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh leading the bowling effort. Arshdeep produced an impressive spell of 3/19 from his four overs, keeping Afghanistan’s scoring under control during the innings. Azmatullah Omarzai provided the main resistance for the visitors, scoring a fighting 64 off 44 balls, but Afghanistan struggled to build enough momentum against India’s disciplined attack.

The target proved relatively straightforward for India, largely because of an explosive innings from Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed batter launched an aggressive assault at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, smashing 82 runs from only 32 deliveries. His innings included seven fours and seven sixes, allowing India to chase down the target in just 13.4 overs and underline the team’s dominance in the opening match of the series.

While Abhishek’s performance strengthened India’s top-order options, Samson’s contribution was limited to just 10 runs. The decision to keep the young batter on the bench indicated that the team management still wanted to provide Samson with an opportunity, but the lack of runs has made the selection debate more difficult to ignore.

Sooryavanshi’s emergence has now created a direct challenge for Samson’s position at the top of the order. The youngster has been viewed as one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket, and his presence in the squad means that another failure from Samson could intensify calls for a change. Although one low score does not determine a player’s future, Samson will need to make the most of his next opportunity if he wants to retain his place in the side.
