Rohit Sharma's century in India's record chase against West Indies was followed by an unusual celebration that caught the attention of former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs. Rohit scored 101 as India chased down 406 in the second ODI in Guwahati, helping the hosts take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. After reaching his 35th ODI century, Rohit hopped and jogged towards the non-striker's end rather than celebrating in his usual understated manner.
Gibbs reacted to the celebration on social media, saying he planned to message Rohit about it. “Gonna message Rohit and tell him his 100 celebration was a stinker. What was that!” Gibbs wrote on X. Rohit had chosen not to explain the meaning behind the unusual high-knee celebration, saying only that it was something “for me”. His decision to keep the reason private added to the curiosity surrounding the moment.
Gibbs and Rohit share a history from their time together at Mumbai Indians in 2012, when they were teammates and also featured in a century partnership against Kolkata Knight Riders. The former South Africa batter has previously spoken about Rohit's batting and described him as technically superior to Virat Kohli, while noting differences in their approach to white-ball cricket. Gibbs has also previously referred to Rohit by the nickname “Kepke”, another comment that drew attention among fans.

The century was particularly significant for Rohit, who has faced questions about his future in international cricket. It was his second hundred in three matches, following his century against England at Lord's in July. With India needing to chase 406 after West Indies posted 405, Rohit and Shubman Gill provided the ideal start, putting together a 255-run opening partnership. Gill remained unbeaten as India completed the chase and secured the series.
Rohit said after the match that the pair focused on batting according to the merit of each delivery rather than becoming distracted by the size of the target. He praised Gill for remaining in control throughout the innings and said the conditions were challenging, making it important for the top order to build a substantial partnership. Rohit added that his experience helped him remain focused and avoid giving his wicket away while the pitch continued to offer good batting conditions.
The unusual celebration therefore became one of the talking points from a match dominated by India's successful chase and the 811 runs scored across both innings. While Gibbs publicly questioned the gesture and indicated that he would ask Rohit about it directly, Rohit has so far kept its meaning private. His 101, meanwhile, extended his tally to 35 ODI centuries and formed the foundation of India's successful chase alongside Gill's unbeaten contribution.
