India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has described the upcoming historic Test against England at Lord’s as a “very big moment” for her team, saying victory could restore confidence after their disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. The match begins on Friday and will be the first women’s Test staged at Lord’s, 142 years after the iconic venue hosted its first men’s Test.
India entered the red-ball contest following a group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup in England and Wales. Harmanpreet admitted the early elimination had left the players disappointed after they failed to perform consistently as a team. She believes the Lord’s Test offers an opportunity to make a fresh start, rebuild confidence and gain momentum ahead of future tournaments.
The Indian captain said success would depend on the players staying together, supporting one another and contributing as a team. Harmanpreet described playing a Test at Lord’s as a childhood dream for cricketers and said the entire squad was excited about the opportunity. She also admitted being surprised to learn that the famous venue had never previously hosted a women’s Test.

Harmanpreet acknowledged that switching to red-ball cricket would be challenging because women’s teams play relatively few Tests. However, she said India had completed four or five productive training sessions and the players had looked comfortable in the nets. The captain believes the excitement surrounding the historic occasion will motivate the team to overcome its limited exposure to the longer format and produce its best performance.
The skipper also expressed support for more women’s Test matches in the future, while acknowledging that scheduling decisions ultimately rest with the International Cricket Council and national cricket boards. Harmanpreet said players want to compete regularly and pointed to the gradual increase in red-ball opportunities. India played a Test in Australia in March and will now contest another against England at Lord’s.
India will also look to left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who is set to make her Test debut after finishing as the team’s leading wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup. Harmanpreet described the youngster as one of India’s key bowlers and praised her ability to deliver crucial overs and provide breakthroughs. With India carrying a strong recent Test record and a history of competitive performances against England, the captain hopes the landmark Lord’s fixture can mark the beginning of a successful new chapter.
