A return of Formula 1 to India by 2027 appears unlikely despite recent optimism expressed by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. While the government has indicated efforts to revive the Indian Grand Prix, Formula 1 officials have clarified that such a timeline is not feasible given the complexities involved in organising the event.
Mandaviya had earlier suggested that India could host a race as early as 2027, potentially at the Buddh International Circuit. However, F1 authorities responded by stating that although India remains an important market with a passionate fanbase, planning and executing a Grand Prix requires significant time, coordination, and logistical groundwork, making a 2027 return unrealistic.
The Buddh International Circuit previously hosted Formula 1 races from 2011 to 2013, earning praise for its infrastructure and organisation. Despite the initial success, the event was discontinued after just three editions due to regulatory challenges and financial constraints that affected its long-term viability.

One of the major hurdles was the classification of Formula 1 as an entertainment event rather than a sport by the Uttar Pradesh government at the time. This led to heavy taxation, significantly increasing operational costs for organisers and ultimately forcing the championship to exit India.
Despite these setbacks, Mandaviya has reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing Formula 1 back to the country. He stated that discussions are underway at multiple levels to make India a more attractive destination for the sport, including exploring incentives such as tax reimbursements if full exemptions are not possible.
Parallel developments in the ownership of the circuit have also drawn attention, with Adani Enterprises securing approval for a major resolution plan involving Jaiprakash Associates, the former owner of the track. Founder Jaiprakash Gaur has endorsed the transition, expressing confidence that the new leadership under Gautam Adani could revitalise the circuit and potentially support future international sporting events in India.
