Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly begun a major overhaul of their coaching setup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming set to leave the franchise after nearly two decades. According to a report by Cricbuzz, Fleming's departure is expected to be part of a broader restructuring following CSK's disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, in which the five-time champions finished eighth on the points table with only six wins. Reports also suggest that bowling coach Eric Simons could be among those exiting the support staff, while the future of batting coach Mike Hussey remains uncertain.
The reported changes come after a difficult year for the Super Kings across multiple competitions. In addition to CSK's struggles in the IPL, Texas Super Kings, another franchise coached by Fleming in Major League Cricket (MLC), finished at the bottom of the standings after losing seven of their ten matches. The report stated that although discussions regarding Fleming's future had been ongoing, the poor performance in the United States ultimately influenced the franchise's decision to make a leadership change.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath paid tribute to Fleming's remarkable contribution, describing him as the driving force behind the franchise's success over the past 18 years. She credited the former New Zealand captain with shaping the team's identity, vision and pursuit of excellence since its inception. Gurunath said that while Fleming's tenure as head coach was coming to an end, his contribution would remain an inseparable part of Chennai Super Kings' legacy and history.

Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan also acknowledged Fleming's impact beyond match results, highlighting his role in building a culture centred on consistency, humility and teamwork. He said Fleming's ability to understand players and bring out the best in individuals had been instrumental in establishing the values that defined CSK over the years. Viswanathan added that the franchise was proud of the journey shared with Fleming and the standards he helped establish.
Reflecting on his departure, Fleming described his association with Chennai Super Kings as the defining chapter of his coaching career. He expressed gratitude to the franchise, players, support staff and fans for their support throughout nearly two decades. Fleming said the team had experienced unforgettable triumphs, overcome difficult phases together and created memories that would remain with him for life, adding that CSK would always hold a special place in his heart.
If confirmed, Fleming's departure would mark the end of one of the longest and most successful coach-franchise partnerships in IPL history. Under his guidance, Chennai Super Kings emerged as one of the league's most consistent teams, winning multiple IPL titles and establishing a reputation for stability and sustained success. The reported coaching reshuffle signals the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise as it seeks to rebuild and return to title contention in IPL 2027.
