Cricket Australia is exploring the possibility of staging a Big Bash League (BBL) match in India next season as part of its strategy to tap into the country’s lucrative cricket market. According to reports, the move is also linked to plans for a potential sale of at least two of the league’s eight franchises. The proposal is still at an exploratory stage and subject to multiple approvals.
A report said two senior officials from Cricket Australia recently travelled to India to assess the feasibility of hosting an overseas BBL fixture. The officials—head of business operations Phil Rigby and head of competition development and strategy Margot Harley—reportedly held discussions regarding logistics and potential venues.
As per another report, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has received a proposal to host the match, with Chennai emerging as a likely venue. The move is seen as an effort to strengthen the BBL’s global footprint and deepen engagement with Indian fans ahead of future commercial developments.

The Big Bash League is regarded as one of the world’s leading T20 competitions. The Perth Scorchers are considered a logical candidate to feature in India due to time-zone compatibility and reported openness from WACA officials to outside investment interest.
However, the proposal remains far from final, with approvals required from key stakeholders, including broadcasters and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Any offshore fixture would need formal clearance before plans can move forward.
