Billionaire industrialist Anil Agarwal has called for the creation of an Indian Premier League franchise representing Bihar, arguing that the state deserves greater recognition in Indian cricket after producing several talented players in recent years. Agarwal made the appeal through a social media post in which he highlighted Bihar’s growing contribution to the sport and urged stronger investment in cricket infrastructure and opportunities for young players from the region.
The Vedanta Resources chairman said Bihar has consistently produced exceptional cricketing talent despite lacking an IPL team of its own. He pointed to emerging and established players such as Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Saqib Hussain as examples of the state’s cricketing potential. Agarwal noted that Kishan, who was born in Patna, holds the record for the fastest double century in One Day International cricket by balls faced, while Sooryavanshi has gained national attention as one of the youngest players to debut in the IPL.
In his message, Agarwal questioned why Bihar still lacks a strong cricketing identity despite the success stories emerging from the state. He said Bihar’s youth deserve access to better sporting facilities, world-class infrastructure, and sustained support systems that can help nurture future generations of cricketers. Calling Bihar “an emotion,” Agarwal pledged unconditional support toward improving the state’s cricket ecosystem and helping local players compete at the highest levels of the game.

The demand for a Bihar-based IPL franchise has gained traction among cricket fans in recent years, particularly as the league continues to expand commercially and geographically. Since the launch of the IPL in 2008, a total of 15 franchises have participated in the tournament, with the most recent additions being Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2022 season. However, several large states, including Bihar, still remain without representation in the tournament.
Agarwal’s remarks also come amid increasing discussions about the future expansion of the IPL. Earlier this year, IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal indicated that the tournament could eventually expand from 74 matches to 94 matches beginning in 2028 by adopting a complete home-and-away format among the existing 10 teams. While there has been no official indication that additional franchises will be introduced in the near future, speculation continues over which regions could be considered if the league expands again.
Bihar has historically faced challenges in cricket administration and infrastructure development compared to some other Indian states, but the emergence of talented players from smaller towns has renewed attention on the region’s sporting potential. Cricket observers believe a dedicated IPL franchise could boost investment, improve facilities, and inspire wider participation among aspiring athletes across the state. Agarwal’s public endorsement has now added momentum to the conversation surrounding Bihar’s place in India’s most lucrative cricket tournament.
