Bibiano Fernandes is set to return to the India youth football setup after reportedly accepting the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) offer to coach the U-15 national team at the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan later this year. His decision brings an end to uncertainty surrounding the head coach position, although it could leave Minerva Academy owner Ranjit Bajaj's proposed role with the team in doubt.

The AIFF technical committee had identified Fernandes as its preferred candidate, with the federation's executive approving his appointment as head coach last week. Fernandes had initially expressed concerns about the proposed coaching structure, particularly over the possibility of interference in footballing matters. Those concerns were reportedly addressed after the responsibilities of the coaching and managerial positions were clarified.

The initial arrangement had seen Bajaj being considered for the team manager's position, while Fernandes was expected to handle coaching duties. Bajaj had previously indicated that he would be willing to take up the managerial role if Fernandes declined the coaching offer. However, with Fernandes now reportedly agreeing to lead the team, Bajaj may be reluctant to accept a position that would primarily involve administrative and logistical responsibilities.

Under the revised structure, Fernandes is expected to have control over football-related matters, including coaching and player selection. The manager, meanwhile, will oversee logistical and administrative responsibilities. The separation of duties is intended to give the head coach greater authority over sporting decisions while reducing the concerns that had surrounded the original proposal.

Fernandes brings considerable experience to the role. The former India midfielder previously guided the country's youth side to three consecutive AFC U-16/17 Asian Cups between 2018 and 2023. He also oversaw India's notable 2-1 victory over Iran, a result that helped the country qualify for this year's championship. Bajaj, meanwhile, has developed Minerva Academy into one of India's prominent youth football programmes, with the academy winning domestic and international honours.

The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival will introduce a new format involving all 211 FIFA member associations. The tournament will feature eight-a-side matches consisting of two 20-minute halves, while each participating team can register 14 players, including a maximum of two goalkeepers. For India, the competition will provide a significant international platform for its youngest national-team players, with Fernandes now expected to lead preparations for the country's participation in the new-age FIFA tournament.
