India's T20I setup has undergone a major shake-up with Suryakumar Yadav being removed from both the captaincy and the national T20 squad just months after leading the team to a historic T20 World Cup triumph. The 35-year-old, who captained India to its third T20 World Cup title earlier this year, has been left out of the squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England as well as the Asian Games, with Shreyas Iyer appointed as the new T20I captain.
Explaining the decision, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the selection committee had reviewed players' performances over an extended period and concluded that a change was necessary. Agarkar acknowledged that informing Yadav of the decision was difficult, especially given his recent success as captain, but stressed that the move was made in the team's long-term interests. He said the conversation with Yadav was not easy and declined to disclose further details of their discussion.
According to Agarkar, a combination of form and future planning influenced the decision. While Yadav remained an effective leader and guided India to several important victories, selectors felt the time was right to move in a different direction. Agarkar also indicated that Iyer had been part of the leadership plans for some time, making him the preferred candidate to lead the next phase of India's T20 project.

Yadav's recent batting numbers appear to have played a significant role in the decision. Between January 2025 and March 2026, he scored 702 runs in 35 T20 internationals at an average of 26. During his captaincy stint, his average dropped to 25.88, although he still managed six half-centuries. Those figures marked a sharp decline from his pre-captaincy record, when he averaged more than 43 and established himself as one of the world's most destructive T20 batters.
Despite the downturn in form, Yadav's tenure included notable achievements. Under his leadership, India won the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup, adding to the success he had previously enjoyed as a member of India's victorious squads in the 2023 Asia Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup. His innovative strokeplay and ability to accelerate under pressure made him one of the format's most influential players for several years.
However, consistency proved elusive after late 2024. Following a half-century against Bangladesh in October 2024, Yadav endured a lengthy lean patch before rediscovering form against New Zealand in early 2026. Although he began the T20 World Cup with an unbeaten 84 against the United States, he was unable to maintain that momentum throughout the tournament. The selectors' decision now signals the end of his captaincy era and the beginning of a new chapter under Iyer's leadership.
