Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most celebrated off-spinners, announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), concluding a remarkable 16-year journey in the tournament. The 38-year-old, who retired from international cricket in December 2024 during India’s Australia tour, shared the news via a social media post on X, stating, “My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
Ashwin, India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 scalps, expressed gratitude to the IPL, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and franchises for the memories and relationships forged over the years. Debuting with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009, he played a pivotal role in their title triumphs in 2010 and 2011.
Ashwin returned to CSK in 2025 for Rs 9.75 crore, marking his final IPL appearance in the yellow jersey. His illustrious IPL career spanned 220 matches across CSK, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, amassing 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 and scoring 833 runs.
