Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain indispensable to India's ODI setup as long as they are committed to playing the format. Ashwin made the remarks following India's ODI series against England, where Rohit Sharma answered questions about his future by producing a memorable century at Lord's despite India's defeat in the series decider.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said the experience, achievements and stature of Rohit and Kohli make them extremely difficult to replace in the Indian ODI side. He noted that both players have built exceptional careers and command massive support among cricket fans, adding that any decision to leave them out would generate widespread public reaction. According to Ashwin, their performances over the years have earned them the right to continue in the team if they remain available for selection.
Ashwin's comments came after Rohit Sharma produced a superb 138 off 84 balls while leading India's pursuit of a challenging 388-run target at Lord's. The innings marked Rohit's 34th ODI century and made him the first Indian men's cricketer to score a century at the historic venue. Although India fell short of the target, Rohit's knock was widely praised for its quality and aggression under pressure.

The former off-spinner also lauded Rohit's ability to deliver after a relatively lean run with the bat earlier in the year. Ashwin said the century could mark the beginning of a strong comeback for the Indian captain, adding that Rohit appeared to regain confidence after settling into his innings. He suggested that with greater rhythm, Rohit could have played an even bigger innings and potentially guided India to victory.
Ashwin further remarked that Rohit no longer has anything left to prove in international cricket, saying the only motivation required is the personal desire to continue performing at the highest level. He added that Rohit's focus should now be on maintaining form and fitness with an eye on representing India in the next major ICC tournament, including the ODI World Cup.
The remarks add to the ongoing discussion surrounding the future of India's senior players as the team prepares for upcoming international assignments. While debates over squad transition and long-term planning continue, Ashwin's comments underscore the value of experience and the significant role Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to play in India's ODI ambitions.
