Royal Challengers Bengaluru strengthened their case as the dominant side of IPL 2026 after a commanding 92-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1, booking a place in the tournament final and reigniting discussions over India’s future T20I captaincy options. Much of the attention after the match centred around RCB captain Rajat Patidar, whose unbeaten 93 off 33 balls powered the defending champions to a massive total of 254/5.
In reply, Gujarat Titans failed to mount a serious challenge and were bowled out for 162 in a one-sided contest. RCB’s comprehensive win capped off a strong league campaign in which they finished at the top of the table with nine victories in 14 matches. Patidar’s aggressive innings and tactical leadership have further elevated his standing among emerging captaincy contenders in Indian cricket.
The debate over India’s next long-term T20I captain has intensified throughout IPL 2026, with several names emerging during the season. Shreyas Iyer was initially viewed as a leading candidate after guiding Punjab Kings through a strong first half of the campaign. However, Punjab’s dramatic collapse — losing six consecutive matches and missing the playoffs — weakened that momentum despite Iyer’s strong leadership credentials, including previous title-winning campaigns with Kolkata Knight Riders and domestic success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Sanju Samson also remained part of the conversation because of his experience leading Rajasthan Royals and his consistent batting performances in recent seasons. However, Patidar’s rapid rise as a leader has increasingly drawn attention. Having joined RCB in 2022 as an injury replacement, the 32-year-old was appointed captain in 2025 and led the franchise to its maiden IPL title, ending an 18-year wait for the trophy.
Patidar’s leadership has been widely praised for its composure, tactical awareness and ability to handle high-pressure situations. While star batter Virat Kohli remains the face of the franchise, Patidar has emerged as a key figure behind RCB’s transformation from perennial underachievers into title contenders. His bowling changes, calm decision-making and ability to contribute crucial runs have been seen as major strengths throughout the season.
Former India batter Ambati Rayudu recently backed Patidar for a place in India’s T20 setup and even suggested he should be considered for leadership responsibilities. Although Patidar is yet to make his T20I debut despite playing three Tests and one ODI for India, his performances in IPL 2026 have significantly strengthened his case. If RCB secure a second consecutive IPL title in the final on Sunday, calls for Patidar’s inclusion — and potentially a future leadership role — in India’s T20 plans are likely to grow even louder.
