Amid thousands of spectators at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, one fan stood out on Saturday during the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan. Waving an Afghanistan flag under the scorching summer sun, Kabul native Khial Mohammad was among the very few supporters cheering for the visiting side. While the crowd overwhelmingly backed India, Mohammad's presence reflected a deep personal connection to the Afghan team and its journey on the international stage.
Before arriving at the stadium, Mohammad had already tempered expectations about Afghanistan's chances against a strong Indian side. During his cab ride to the venue, he reportedly told the driver that Afghanistan faced an uphill battle but would fight hard regardless of the outcome. His faith in the team's commitment and determination brought him to the ground, where he initially appeared to be the lone Afghan supporter among approximately 2,000 spectators.
For Mohammad, however, the match was about more than cricket. Two players representing Afghanistan on the field were longtime friends from their days in the country's junior cricket circuit. One of them, Nangeyalia Kharote, was making his Test debut. The other, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, also shared a connection with Mohammad through their cricketing backgrounds in Afghanistan. Their progression from local cricket to the international arena gave the fan an additional reason to make the journey to Mullanpur.

As Kharote stepped onto the field for his maiden Test appearance, Mohammad enthusiastically chanted his friend's name from the stands. The moment symbolized not only personal pride but also the progress of Afghan cricket, which has steadily risen despite numerous challenges over the years. By the afternoon, a few more Afghan supporters had arrived at the stadium, but Mohammad had already spent hours carrying the flag for his country on his own.
His story highlighted the emotional bonds that often exist between fans and athletes beyond the boundaries of competition. While Afghanistan may have entered the match as underdogs, the support shown by Mohammad underscored the passion and resilience that continue to define the nation's cricketing community. For one day in Mullanpur, the lone Afghan fan in the crowd became a symbol of friendship, loyalty, and unwavering support for his team.
